RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
